Marin County, a magnificent place to live...
Map from Marin County’s Visitors’ Bureau Website.
Marin County is renowned throughout California and the nation for its scenic splendor. It is also notorious for being one of the most sought after residential areas in the country. Its appeal results from many factors.
Just to the North of San Francisco and across the Golden Gate Bridge, Marin is the most conveniently located suburban County in the Bay Area, It offers a short (30 minutes -45 minutes during rush hour) commute to San Francisco plus three different ferry terminals (there is one in Sausalito, a second one in Tiburon and the third one is in Larkspur Landing) serving the downtown San Francisco business district (and even Pac Bell Park during baseball season). A short distance to the North is California’s world famous wine country and its beautiful Napa and Sonoma Valleys, and to the west are a rugged, scenic coast and white sand beaches. Overlooked by Mount Tamalpais, the ”Sleeping Indian Maiden,” with redwoods on her flanks, San Francisco Bay to the east and south and the Pacific Ocean to the west, it offers breathtaking views from most areas.
Thanks to Marin County's no-growth plan dating back to 1979, less than twenty percent of its 540 square miles is developed. Most of the development is concentrated on the highway 101 corridor.Marin's populations is about 249,000.
Most land is permanently designated as open space, State Parkland, park-like watersheds, or National Recreation Area. Accentuating this beauty is the fact that billboards are illegal in Marin County so you can actually see these beautiful surroundings without the clutter of the typical commercial visual pollution so commonplace in other areas.
With its temperate climate and extensive trails ideal for hiking, jogging, mountain biking or just leisurely strolls with your dog and/or children, it is like a year round playground for adults and children who enjoy the outdoors. Golfing, tennis, fishing, bird watching and kayaking are also all year favorite activities. For those who enjoy water sports, there is immediate deep water access for sailors and numerous yacht harbors, year round surfing at Stinson Beach and windsurfing in San Francisco Bay. Seasonal whale watching can be enjoyed from Point Reyes. The weather is very pleasant, moderated by the Bay to the south and east and the ocean to the west. Southern Marin temperatures range from the typical 60-70's in the summer to 40-50's in the winter. Central and Northern Marin, further from the Bay and occasional morning fog, enjoy slightly warmer temperatures in the summer.
Music, outstanding art and nationally recognized film festivals, professional theatrical and dance performances, are among the many cultural offerings. Diverse restaurants serving locally grown organic fruits and vegetables, artisan cheeses, fresh seafood and superlative California wines cater to a discriminating crowd. Upscale supermarkets and shopping malls, small boutiques, year round outdoor farmers markets further contribute to the superior quality of life in Marin.
Last but not least, Marin County schools, both public and private, are among the best in California, consistently ranked nationally, and most public schools in the County have a Distinguished School rating from the State.
