Welcome to this week’s Friday Marin Favorite, Le Comptoir! Whether you are dining at the Restaurant, or shopping in the adjoining “Epicerie” at Le Comptoir in San Rafael, you are bound to feel transported to France. A French Bistrot and Rotisserie situated at 1301 4th St, San Rafael, CA 94901, Le Comptoir is the sister restaurant of Gamine in San Francisco and is warm, welcoming and unpretentious, yet sophisticated in its menu selection. And it is open late, a rarity in Marin County!

The menu at Le Comptoir includes a selection of French classics, including mussels in a garlicky wine sauce, marrow bones, onion soup, sweetbreads and of course “frites” served with a pungent aioli. Since its opening in April 2016, the restaurant has become one of the most popular eating spots, and a very welcome addition to the short list of French restaurants in Marin County.

As a result, it was no surprise that Stephen Bouillez, who owns Le Comptoir with his wife, Susannah Dempsey, was recently honored with the coveted Special Distinction Award in the Food and Business Category at the French American Business Awards (FABA) Ceremony on May 25, 2017 in San Francisco. FABA is the French American Chamber of Commerce’s annual celebration of who’s who in the French business community in the Bay Area.  And believe me, that was no small feat, as Le Comptoir is the new kid on the block and was competing with huge pillars of the French Food community: Atelier Crenn, Burger Bar, Cafe Bastille, and Piperade. The Gold Award went to Piperade, Le Comptoir came in second with the Special Distinction.

As a French native, I particularly appreciate the Epicerie at Le Comptoir. “Epicerie” in French means grocery, and the Epicerie at Le Comptoir offers a great selection of typical French food items I have been known to carry back in my suitcase from France over the years. Calissons from my native Provence, Amora mustard and sauces, Creme de Marrons (a sweet chestnut cream that is very difficult to find in American supermarkets, I am beyond thrilled they have it at Le Comptoir), Cote d’Or chocolate, Galette St. Michel, Carembars (the French kid’s favorite caramel candy) and much much more… And of course a great selection of French cheeses… Heaven!!! Make sure to check it out next time you are at the restaurant.

If you like French food, and can’t make it to France this summer, just head over to Le Comptoir, enjoy great French specialties at the restaurant, and step into the Epicerie next door. You might want to bring home some Creme de Marrons with which you can create a typical French dessert: add a swirl of creme de marrons to a scoop of French Vanilla ice cream, sprinkle with toasted pine nuts, et voila, you have a scrumptious dessert without slaving in the kitchen.
Bon appetit!
P.S.: Did I mention that the Profiteroles are out of this world at Le Comptoir? I had them for my birthday, and loved every bite.
