I am very excited to share with you this week’s Friday Marin Favorite – Amphora Nueva in San Anselmo. Amphora Nueva is located in the heart of downtown San Anselmo at 429 San Anselmo Avenue, and I am pretty confident that this local, family owned business will become a favorite of yours even if you don’t do a lot of cooking.
The name is well suited for the store. An Amphora is a type of container descending from at least as early as the Neolithic Period. Amphorae were used in vast numbers for the transport and storage of various products, both liquid and dry, but mostly for wine.
At Amphora, you will not find wine, but you will be able to taste 80 different unique products, including award winning ultra premium olive oil and aged balsamic vinegar, and purchase them in bulk at a very reasonable price.
I promise you that after tasting Amphora’s olive oils, you will not want to go back to store bought olive oil, the origin, press time and chemistry of which you are totally ignorant. The folks at Amphora believe that extra virgin olive oil is like fruit juice: highly perishable, healthier and more flavorful when consumed fresh. This is one of the reasons why they post the Harvest Date on every oil they offer. They are also “fanatical” when it comes to the chemistry of their olive oils and measure the polyphenol count (antioxidant value), and oleic acid in their oils. These measurements help determine the level of monounsaturated fat that makes olive oil so healthy for you and whether an oil is suitable for high heat cooking.
You can select between olive oils that are fused (i.e. the olives were crushed simultaneously with the added fruit or vegetable) or infused (i.e. the flavors were added after the olives had been crushed). After tasting them, I wanted to buy a bottle of each, but the Blood Orange Olive Oil and the Tunisian Baklouti Green Chile Pepper were the ones that came home with me.
Other favorites of mine include the Honey Ginger White Balsamic Vinegar, the Traditional Style Aged Dark Balsamic Vinegar (aged 18 years), the Toasted Japanese Sesame Oil, and the White and Black Truffle Oils.
